Los paneles solares en realidad comprenden muchas unidades peque\u00f1as llamadas c\u00e9lulas fotovoltaicas, en donde fotovoltaica simplemente significa que convierte la luz solar en electricidad.<\/p>\n<p>Cada c\u00e9lula fotovoltaica es b\u00e1sicamente un s\u00e1ndwich hecho de dos rebanadas de material semiconductor, usualmente silicio, el mismo material que es utilizado en microelectr\u00f3nica.<\/p>\n<p>Para que las c\u00e9lulas fotovoltaicas funcionen se necesita establecer un campo el\u00e9ctrico, al igual como un campo magn\u00e9tico que se forma debido a los polos opuestos, un campo el\u00e9ctrico lo encontramos cuando se separan las cargas opuestas. Para tener este campo, muchos fabricantes estimulan o \u201cdopan\u201d el silicio con otros materiales, dando a cada porci\u00f3n de este s\u00e1ndwich una carga el\u00e9ctrica positiva o negativa.<\/p>\n<p>Los fabricantes, espec\u00edficamente, siembran f\u00f3sforo en la capa superior de silicio, lo cual a\u00f1ade electrones extra, con una carga negativa a esta capa.
