Avolta and ICU Medical completed both phases of Costa Rica’s largest private photovoltaic project for distributed generation, a milestone that sets a new precedent for solar energy generation in the country’s business sector.
The project reaches a total installed capacity of 4.56 MW-DC. During its first year of operation, it is expected to produce approximately 6.5 GWh of clean energy per year, enough to cover the energy consumption of nearly 2,500 homes in Costa Rica.
In addition to representing a significant advancement in energy and environmental matters, the project will have a direct economic impact by reducing energy consumption by 16% during the first year.
“This project posed a technical challenge for Avolta due to the high standards required by ICU Medical, while also representing a major milestone for the development of private solar energy in Costa Rica. Its scale demonstrates that large industrial operations can move toward a more efficient, competitive, and sustainable energy model,” says Daniel Rojas, CEO of Avolta.

Measurable Environmental Impact
The project will also have a positive impact on reducing the environmental footprint of ICU Medical’s operations. According to estimates, this project will prevent approximately 683.78 tons of CO₂ emissions each year.
This environmental benefit is equivalent to the impact of more than 6,400 trees, demonstrating how distributed generation can make a tangible contribution to the sustainability goals of both the business sector and the country.

A Partnership to Transform Energy
Executing a project of this scale required close coordination between the ICU Medical and Avolta teams, as well as technical planning capable of addressing the energy and operational requirements of a large-scale industrial facility.
Beyond its installed capacity, the project demonstrates that solar energy can become a strategic tool for reducing costs, increasing competitiveness, and advancing toward operations with a lower environmental impact.
